Tex Atkinson
Tex Atkinson, Commander USN (retired) was a carrier pilot during the Korean
War. He flew over 100 combat missions in the Douglas AD Skyraider from the
carriers USS Princeton and USS Boxer. He is a graduate of the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University.
Tex was born in Hillsboro, Texas and spent most of his growing up years there. He began his naval career in 1945 when he completed high school and entered the navy's flight program. He won his wings in 1949.
From The Cockpit was written by Tex as a memoir of his growing up years during depression days and World War II combined with his experience during
the Korean War. It was a time of great change. Within a few short years our nation progressed from the Radio days of Amos and Andy to Hiroshima and the
Atomic Age.
The book enjoys continued success because it is an old fashioned page turner that takes the reader from laughter to tears in recreating a time almost
buried between World War II and Vietnam.
